Adobe Photoshop 1 (Selections and Manipulations)

Participants will examine the Photoshop interface. Selections from the toolbar will be defined, discussed, and applied to a graphic. Invaluable shortcuts for opening, viewing, and selecting will be taught. Work with palettes and palette menus. Learn and apply the creative skills needed for manipulating graphics. These skills include selecting, editing, and rotating shapes, then adding the shapes to another graphic.

Adobe Photoshop 2 (Layers, Frames, and Edges)

Participants will learn advanced layer techniques to selectively hide and reveal portions of artwork, to align images, and to add layer effects to a type layer.

Adobe Photoshop 3 (Banners, Brushes, and Colors)

Unravel the mystery of Photoshop. Learning how to use layers is the key! This class teaches the fundamentals of layering. To understand layering, think of stacking transparencies of different graphics to give the appearance of one image. Add some art to the mystery with Painting and Editing. Work with colors, brushes, gradients, and more.

Adobe Photoshop 4 (Photo Manipulation)

In this class, participants learn to use masks to protect parts of an image from change, just like using masking tape to paint a room or a vehicle, or using a stencil to letter a sign. Students also learn to retouch photos. They will learn to remove unwanted objects from a picture, change a gray sky to partly cloudy, and brighten the colors.

Advanced Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

In this follow up to the Introduction to CSS workshop, we will go beyond basic CSS selectors. This workshop will cover using CSS selectors to style only the exact elements you want. Want to style something more than simple HTML tags, ids, and classes? What about even rows of a table, odd items in a list, only images that are inside of a paragraph inside of a div tag? All of it is possible (and simple) utilizing CSS pseudo selectors and descendant selectors. As a bonus, being able to write good selectors is the first step in utilizing the power of jQuery.

This course is an overview of Apple's popular digital audio software. Participants will learn basic audio editing techniques useful in creating a podcast or other audio editing needs. The class will cover:
  • Recording audio files

Apple iMovie

Atlas.ti is a qualitative data-analysis package used to organize and analyze resources used in qualitative research. Atlas.ti allows researchers to code documents, images, audio, video, and geographic data. Researchers can also use the software to annotate findings and express relationships using data visualization tools. This workshop will provide an overview of the software. The interface and features are demonstrated, along with examples of research projects utilizing the software. Participants will import and organize data in Atlas.ti, add research notes and annotations, and code qualitative data. Participants will also understand the potential of Atlas.ti as a tool for organizing, analyzing, visualizing, and reporting qualitative research data.

This workshop series is an introduction to using Evernote and OneNote for notetaking. In each 50-minute workshop, we will introduce the digital tool, give an overview of the interface, and allow you to explore the tool on a mobile device. Please note that each workshop focuses on an individual tool, and you may sign up for one or both depending on your interests. If you have a tablet, you are encouraged to bring it to this workshop but if not, we will provide one for you to use.

It’s more than just creating a survey, although we can do that with Google Forms too, but you can also create registration information, take a quick poll, collect email addresses, and even create a pop quiz that can be taken on any device and the results sent back to a spreadsheet in real-time where you can create charts to help you analyze the data. In this class you’ll learn the basics of using Google Forms by designing a form to collect email addresses and creating a quick opinion poll.

Image Processing Using ImageJ

This is an introductory course on computer processing of visual information using ImageJ. The topics to be covered include basic image processing techniques such as image enhancement and segmentation. We will mainly use ImageJ for demonstration, but MATLAB Image Processing Toolkit and R image processing packages will also be briefly discussed. Preliminary knowledge of ImageJ is not required.

This hands-on workshop takes you from starting the package through data coding, entry and cleanup, creating new variables, how to get output for different groups, how to request an analysis or a graph, manipulating the output, and where you can learn more. The hands-on lab session will employ the easy-to-use version for Microsoft Windows, but the menus are almost identical on Macintosh and Linux. Participants should have basic knowledge of Windows, Macintosh, or UNIX X-Windows. You may bring your own laptop if you wish.

SPSS 2 (SPSS Data Analysis)

Topics include: exploring your data to find errors, extreme values and sparse categories; examining the distributions of continuous variables; measuring the strength of association between two continuous variables; comparing two groups on categorical and continuous variables and where to go to learn more.
