Explanatory Machine Learning in R focuses on understanding machine learning models to provide clear, interpretable insights rather than simply developing models or generating predictions. By leveraging R’s ecosystem of machine learning packages including ‘tidymodels’ and ‘DALEX’, explanatory machine learning emphasizes transparency in model behavior, variable importance, and the relationships between predictors and categorical outcomes. This workshop will discuss explaining machine learning models using both global and local model explanations. Topics will include overall model performance plots, variable importance metrics, partial dependence plots, accumulate local profiles and effects plots, breakdown plots, Shapley additive explanations, local interpretable model agnostic explanations, and other explanatory tools for machine learning.
