Best Practices for Online Surveys

Fall Training 2026: Empower Your Skills with Supported Technologies

This workshop covers essential strategies for designing, implementing, and managing effective online surveys. Participants will learn best practices across the entire survey lifecycle, from question design and wording to survey structure and logic. We’ll briefly explore when Qualtrics, REDCap, or Microsoft Forms is the best fit for your survey needs. While we focus on settings and features in Qualtrics, you’ll discover that much of the guidance applies across survey platforms.

Topics include optimizing survey length and format, setting up skip logic and branching, pilot testing, and accessibility considerations. Whether you’re conducting academic research, institutional surveys, or longitudinal studies, this workshop provides guidance to improve survey quality and data integrity.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Design clear, unbiased survey questions and organize them into an effective survey structure.
  • Apply survey logic, including skip patterns and branching, to create an efficient respondent experience.
  • Evaluate survey platforms—including Qualtrics, REDCap, and Microsoft Forms—to select an appropriate tool for a given project.
  • Use pilot testing, accessibility practices, and format considerations to improve survey quality, data integrity, and response rates.
Workshop occurs in Eastern Standard Time (EST).
